New York 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course
Purpose: This course is required for anyone applying for their first New York State driver license (Class D or DJ). It teaches the fundamentals of safe and responsible driving.
Course Details:
  • Official Name: Pre-Licensing Course (MV-278)
  • Duration: 5 hours (in-person classroom only)
  • Eligibility: New drivers who have already obtained a learner permit
Topics Covered:
  • Rules of the road
  • Defensive driving techniques
  • Safe driving habits
  • Effects of drugs and alcohol on driving
  • Traffic laws and road signs
Certificate:
Upon completion, students receive an MV-278 Certificate, valid for one year. This certificate is required to schedule a road test with the New York State DMV.
New York 6-Hour Point and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP)
Purpose: A voluntary defensive driving course designed for licensed drivers who want to reduce points on their record and lower insurance costs.
Course Details:
  • Official Name: Point & Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP)
  • Duration: 6 hours (in-person classroom only)
  • Eligibility: Licensed drivers seeking to improve driving records or reduce insurance premiums
Topics Covered:
  • Defensive driving skills
  • Crash prevention
  • Traffic laws and safe driving behavior
  • Risk awareness and hazard perception
Benefits:
  • Point Reduction: Removes up to 4 points from your DMV record for violations within the past 18 months.
  • Insurance Discount: Qualifies you for a 10% discount on the base rate of liability, no-fault, and collision premiums for three years.
